The Stages of Perimenopause

Where Are You on the Peri Spectrum?….

Feeling lost in the land of perimenopause? You’re not alone. This confusing stage can leave you wondering, “Am I in perimenopause, or is this something else?”

Today, we’ll break down the four stages of perimenopause, so you can identify where you are on the journey and what to expect.

Phase 1: Very Early Perimenopause

This might surprise you, but your periods might still be regular during this phase. The key change? Your hormones are already shifting behind the scenes. Progesterone, your calming hormone, starts to decline. This can lead to symptoms like anxiety, trouble sleeping, and headaches.

This phase can last anywhere from a few months to several years, typically starting in your early 40s, although it can begin as early as your late 30s.

Phase 2: Early Perimenopause Transition

Here’s where things get a little less predictable. Your periods may become irregular, heavier, or lighter than usual. Mood swings, irritability, and hot flashes might also start to show up. This is because not only is progesterone dropping, but estrogen is starting to fluctuate as well.

This phase can last 2-3 years and is when many women experience the classic symptoms we associate with perimenopause.

Phase 3: Late Perimenopause Transition

Get ready for some serious period inconsistency! Cycles can stretch to 60 days or more, leaving you wondering when (or if) your next period will arrive. This is often the time when symptoms like night sweats and weight gain become more prominent.

During this phase, estrogen is really taking a rollercoaster ride, causing these more intense symptoms. It can last for a few years.

Phase 4: Late Perimenopause

The home stretch! Your periods become even more sporadic, with months in between. You might even skip a few altogether. But here’s the key: you haven’t officially reached menopause until you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period.

Estrogen is finally starting to settle down at a new, lower level, and progesterone is no longer a player. Symptoms may improve during this phase, although some women still experience challenges.
